The Highway to Hana This is one of Maui’s most famous activities. A whole day should be dedicated to the trip to Hana. The highway is a 60-mile stretch of Highway that curves along the Northeastern part of the island. It is an extremely curvy drive along steep cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Along the way, you will drive over 50 one-lane bridges and narrow roads. Stop for pictures at waterfalls, lush gardens, and bamboo forrests. If you get hungry along the way stop at a mango tree. All fruit trees within 5 feet of the road are free to eat. Whale Watching Cruise: From December to April it's whale watch season on Maui. Whales can be spotted regularly from the Southern and Western shores. You can take a cruise for a few hours to watch these graceful creatures. Most tours leave from Lahaina. |

Driving up Haleakala Haleakala is the majestic dormant volcano on Maui. It rises over 10,000 feet above sea level. It is an amazing drive to the peak. If you go on a clear day, the views are just amazing. If you go on a cloudy day, you will actually be able to drive through the clouds. When you reach the top, you feel like you are in an airplane looking down at the clouds. It takes about 2-2.5 hours to reach the top, depending on what area of the island you depart from. Be sure to bring a sweatshirt or jacket. As you reach high elevations, it gets cold. Depending on the time of the year, there may be snow at the top. The air is also thin, so people with breathing problems may want to find out more information. Many people choose to make this journey before sunset or before sunrise. It is awe inspiring to watch the sun rise from the top of Haleakala. Bike down Haleakala If you are looking for an exhilarating activity, a bike down Haleakala is a great option. A van takes you and the bikes to the top. A guide leads you and other adventurers down the volcano. Enjoy the fresh air and scenery as you coast all the way down. |
